This bust was made in 1933 and carved directly in patinated mahogany, with no touching up. The artist seeks to approach the model of the Canary Islands’ woman, since the headscarf tied around her head follows the scheme of other so-called «indigenists» such as the artist discussed earlier, Santiago Santana. This work was produced after Manolo Ramos’ arrival in Paris when he opened a studio in Sagasta Street in Las Palmas.
She was a young woman from the capital, well-heeled and who met Manolo Ramos as he strolled the nearby streets. The artist was struck by her beauty. Given that back then, it wasn’t appropriate for a lady to pose for an artist, Manolo Ramos had to speak to the young lady’s father to secure his approval.
